News that a £7 (yes, no zeros on that) is to be launched In India has just started filtering through and we’re all agog at the price. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras are behind the gadget named the Sakshat which means ‘before your eyes’. With a launch date set for six months time, the computer is set to have wireless Internet connectivity, 2GB memory and use only 2watts of power. The Indian government’s Higher Education Secretary, R P Agrawal said that a range of educational materials will be released by the government and be accessed via the computer.

Sceptics however are critisising the estimated cost of the laptop saying that parts alone would cost more than the sale price. The government meanwhile says demand will drive the prices down and are confident of the £7 or 500 rupee estimate.
